The Gypsies. 1939
Grand-daughter of Charles Darwin. Studied at the Slade School of Fine Art 1908-10. Friendship with Eric Gill and Stanley Spencer and later with Virginia Woolf and Andre Gide. Founder member with Gill, Gibbings, John Nash and others, of the Society of Wood Engravers, 1920. First one-person exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, 1927.
Important book commissions in the 1930s. Art critic for Time and Tide 1928-39. Illustrated her own best-selling Period Piece (1952) in which she described her memories of life in Cambridge at the turn of the century. Her engravings were not published in large editions and are now scarce.
